It’s time to sock it to them Leo

- LORD HENRY

I’VE been out and about recently and one of the questions I get asked the most is what do I think about Leo. Well let me start with the socks business. Take it from me Leo, flashy socks can be a distraction. I’ve been wearing odd socks since I was 15. It has given me the moniker Lord Odd Socks and made me look a little eccentric. However, Leo is the Taoiseach and more than a few have said he is all flash and no substance. This perception is not a good thing in a leader. Leo wants to be careful here. After all, he must not forget that Simon Coveney was the membership’s choice because they saw a more thoughtful, methodical individual with perhaps more heightened social conscience. But back to the question, how is his performance so far? The truth of the matter is that Leo is going to be very dependent on the performance of his Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe. This is going to be a somewhat different double act than the Enda and Michael Noonan Show. Here lies the difficulty. They have to manage expectations and most particularly as politicians they have to convince the general public the end to austerity is in sight and only under their leadership can the nation escape from the shackles of the past. Now with this in mind, I want to express a passionately held view, even if it does us damn all good. We need a break from Europe – the Irish nation took a hit in the banking crisis. We saved the French and German banks and we need Europe to take a benign view of our requirement to increase spending on infrastructure. Let us not forget there are reasons we are such a highly indebted nation. Let us see Leo impress that on the newlyminted French President, who as a former banker knows what was done to us. So Leo, the game is on. Paschal, let the nation believe you will deliver the goods. Then I suppose an election?

He should not forget Coveney was the choice of the party’s members
