FAMILY’S €29M RECEIPT

Champagne flows as Euromillions syndicate collects jackpot

- By DAVID COLEMAN

THIS is the receipt for nearly €29million given to a family from the West of Ireland yesterday. The syndicate arrived at Lotto headquarters in Dublin to collect their winnings from last Friday’s Euromillions draw. One of the winners said: “This has come as a huge shock but we are

thrilled. This will certainly make life easier for us all and will secure our futures. “It has been a roller coaster week with lots of butterflies in our stomachs and lots of different emotions. “But we are keeping level heads and we will try to take it all in and we will give it time before we decide what to do with our winnings.” The lucky syndicate handed in their golden ticket, and were given their receipt and bottles of champagne – along with a cheque for €28,975,630. The family, who want to remain anonymous, said the life-changing impact of the win is only just sinking in – and have no idea what they’ll spend it on. The syndicate only began to get word of the huge jackpot win when one of the members checked the numbers last Saturday. The winning Quick Pick was purchased from Umesh Kumar’s Garryduff XL Store on Pound Road in Castlebar, Co Mayo, last Friday. He stands to collect €25,000 for selling the winning ticket. The town has been abuzz with rumours since the huge win. National Lottery chief Dermot Griffin said he was delighted to hand over the winning cheque to the syndicate. He added: “It is important these winners take the time and space to let the news sink in. “This is an incredible amount of money to win, and we have recommended the winners get independent financial and legal advice.” It is the second Euromillions jackpot win for Castlebar. In April 2014, a jackpot worth €15million was claimed on a ticket sold in Staunton’s Costcutter Express. On that occasion, the winner did not go public. It is also the 11th time a Euromillions’ jackpot has been won in Ireland. It follows the win for a Dublin work syndicate in January this year when they shared out an €88.5million jackpot. The country’s biggest win remains Dolores Mcnamara, from Limerick, who took home €115million in 2005. Meanwhile, a former mayor has suggested that Pound Road, where the lucky ticket was sold, should be renamed Euro Boulevard. Johnny Mee, who lives across the road with his wife Mary, said the name change could be appropriate. He added: “A local person mentioned it and I said if it draws attention to Castlebar it would be all the better. “I said I didn’t mind, it might be an omen that we’ll get more millions in Castlebar you know.” DO you know the winners?
