VEALE SAVOURS VICTORY

-

VETERAN Ted Veale proved the star on Day 6 of the Listowel Festival as he defied top-weight in the €55,000 Guinness Handicap. The versatile, Tony Martin-trained 10-year-old came from off the pace under a typically cool ride by apprentice Oisin Orr to master Ibsen inside the final furlong, before that rival’s persistent challenge, by a half-length. “It worked out great,” said Martin. “He’s a grand, honest horse and never lets us down. This was a great pot to win with a horse like him, a ten-year-old.” And, commenting on Oisin, who excelled on John Breslin’s 10-year-old, Martin added: “He’s a star of the future.” Nine-time champion Pat Smullen, inset, joined Colin Keane on the 68-winner mark for the season when partnering Lord Erskine to victory for Harry Rogers in the John & Terry Moriarty Memorial Handicap. The 7/4 favourite was following-up an easy win at Roscommon, for which he was raised 13lb. Not A Bad Oul Day made all to win the €30,000 Bank Of Ireland Handicap for Johnny Feane and apprentice Dylan Hogan, holding the challenge of Tribal Path by a length and a half. Mark Enright took the riding honours in the jumps action partnering the Mouse Morris-trained Dromnea to an emphatic victory over Hidden Cyclone in the €30,000 Southampton Goodwill Chase before guiding favourite Turbojet to a comfortable, 21-length victory for inform trainer Dermot Mcloughlin in the John J Galvin Memorial Maiden Hurdle.
