HURRICANE HARVEY

CATALAN INDEPENDEN­CE

In October, Catalonia voted for independen­ce from Spain in a referendum that was later declared unlawful by the internatio­nal community.

The poll however was overshadow­ed by the aggressive response of Spanish police force who were accused of violence towards people trying to cast their ballots.

It is Spain’s biggest political crisis since democracy was restored in 1975.

ZIMBABWE COUP

In November President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe was forced to resign from his position after 37 years following a military coup.

The six-day

takeover resulted in the 93-year-old’s tyrant’s former ally Emmerson Mnangagwa being sworn in as President.

It emerged in recent days that he was given a generous retirement package.

This deal included three cars and 20 personal staff.
