MORE new cars were licensed at the start of 2017 compared to this year, figures have revealed.

In January, 25,813 new private motors were registered, down from 26,668 the year before.

There were 3,415 new Toyotas licensed last month, making it the most popular brand of car.

The Japanese make along with Ford, Hyundai, Nissan and Volkswagen, represent more than half of the new cars registered in January.

In terms of specific models, Hyundai Tucson was the most popular with 1,113 licensed and Nissan’s Qashqai and Ford Focus were also popular models. THE development of a multi-million euro glamping park featuring a jumbo jet is back on track after it was granted planning permission.

Funeral director David Mcgowan hit many stumbling blocks over his application for Quirky Nights Glamping Village but he is now excited to focus on funding the ambitious project.

The businessman, who lives in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, where the village will be situated, attracted international attention in 2016 when he transported a €20,000 retired 29-year-old Boeing 767 plane north from Co Clare on a barge.

Since then the 57-year-old has added three former London Underground train carriages, a helicopter and a yacht, which arrived from France last year and a fleet of London cabs.

He said: “I’m delighted. The site was useless and it was worthless without planning. It’s full steam ahead now.

“Every aspect of this project has been a challenge.

“The buying it was a challenge, the moving of the various things was a challenge, the planning of it was a challenge. Now we’re into the funding of it will be a challenge as well. There’s no support there whatsoever but it will happen. I’ll get there don’t worry. Didn’t I land the plane when everyone said I wouldn’t?”

Speaking about the lengthy planning process, David added: “That was the most stressful, most soul-destroying experience I’ve had ever.

“There were no objections from local people at all. It was satisfying conditions of the council.

“But I made a few changes to the it and

plan as well so that didn’t help, I’m not blaming the council for that.”

Last year the entrepreneur revealed he had been inundated with requests from couples abroad who wanted to get married in his disused jumbo jet and he said there is still keen interest.

David, from nearby Ballina in Co Mayo, has plans to develop an airport terminal-style building with a forecourt at the front of the 15-acre site.

He said: “I had about 500 enquiries from people looking to get married through my social media and the majority of them were from England, Wales and Scotland.

“I’ve made the terminal building bigger so I can cater for weddings and
