Oscars a Day to remember

- THE ACADEMY AWARDS

UNLESS you are a fully committed Oscars fan, you probably won’t have stayed up all night to watch the ceremony as it happened live from Los Angeles.

But if you’ve managed to avoid the news, you’ll still be wondering if the luck of the Irish will see our nominees celebrate at the 90th Academy Awards?

Actors Saoirse Ronan, and Daniel Day-lewis, director Martin Mcdonagh, designer Consolata Boyle and studio Cartoon Saloon, all arrived at LA’S Dolby Theatre with high hopes.

Host Jimmy Kimmel was back on duty hoping to avoid another mess up after last year’s Moonlight/la La Land fiasco.

But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t rooting for something similar to happen this year.

He said: “This year, we’re going to plant the wrong envelope in a number of categories, just to keep people on their toes.

“And then we’ll be going into the crowd and pulling Oscars from people.”

Given the political climate and the #Metoo and Time’s Up movements, Jimmy said he planned to set the right tone by making people laugh by honouring “those who have been dreaming of this night for their whole lives”.

Among those presenting those iconic statuettes, include past winners and nominees Mahershala Ali, Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman and Laura Dern.

Jennifer Garner, Tiffany Haddish, Greta Gerwig, Tom Holland, Kumail Nanjiani, Margot Robbie, and Daniela Vega will also be on hand to open those famous envelopes.
