Irishman left seriously ill after stab attack in Spain
Probe into 37-yr-old injured at his home
AN Irishman is “seriously ill” in hospital after being stabbed and beaten at his home in Spain.
The 37-year-old was attacked just before 11pm in the Costa del Sol resort of Benalmadena on Wednesday night.
He is being treated at the High Resolution Hospital in the town.
It is believed his injuries include a fractured skull as well as several stab wounds.
The victim’s name has not been released but it has been confirmed he is from Dublin. Investigators are understood to be considering “all possible theories” relating to the incident.
Sources said the man was attacked in the basement of his home and was taken to hospital after staggering upstairs to alert his partner.
Spanish police confirmed they had yet to make any arrests and said they were keeping an open mind on the motive. A spokesman for the National Police in Malaga said: “National Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred last night at a property in Benalmadena.
“The incident occurred at around 11pm.
“Moments later the victim was taken to hospital by people close to him where he was admitted with several stab wounds.
“No arrests have taken place so far and officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“No hypothesis has yet been ruled out.” Asked whether Benalmadena the incident could be feud-related or an attack on a homeowner by intruders intent on robbery, a source close to the case said: “Detectives are keeping an open mind.”
Ireland and Spain have been at the centre of an ongoing gang war between the Kinahan and Hutch families which has so far claimed at least 14 lives.
However, there is no evidence at this stage that the Benalmadena incident is in any way related to the feud.
