206 Garda recruits pass out of college

regret was “not having the courage to express feelings”. With a suppressio­n of emotions to keep the peace, one ends up living a mediocre existence. Ware noted as a result of this many patients developed illnesses relating to bitterness and resentment. Not staying in touch with friends and not being able to track them down in the end was another huge Niamh Hannan Steve Jobs regret. And a surprising­ly common regret was “not allowing myself to be happy”.

Many of Ware’s patients did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice.

Fear of change had them pretending to others and to themselves they were content, when deep down they longed to truly laugh and be silly in their life again.

Financial strain or the pursuit of money and the humdrum of our every day woes seem to take over when we’re alive and it’s only when faced with the end that we can see clearly and open our hearts to what truly matters. Around 800 trainees are due to finish with numbers on track to reach 14,000 by the end of the year.

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said the new recruits were proof of the Government’s commitment to a Garda workforce of 21,000 personnel by 2021.

He added: “I wish each of them a long and rewarding policing career in An Garda Siochana and urge them to remember always that their core role is to serve the community and to do so with dedication and with honour.”

A budget of €1.65billion has been provided to An Garda Siochana in 2018.
