Breffni out for revenge over Rossies

- BY PAT NOLAN

ROSCOMMON ensured Cavan found themselves in Division Two last year, but Mattie Mcgleenan’s side could make a swift return to the top flight at their expense tomorrow.

When CAVAN last travelled to Hyde Park in the final round of last year’s League, they knew that victory would give them a great chance of staying up and at one stage over the course of the afternoon everything was falling into place.

But ROSCOMMON, already doomed themselves, rallied to record their only win of the campaign to take Cavan down with them though, as it happened, other results didn’t pan out for them in any event.

Cavan are currently the only unbeaten side in Division Two on nine points, two ahead of Roscommon and Tipperary, and if they can beat their neighbours tomorrow and Tipp fail to win in Down, Mcgleenan’s side will be promoted with a game to spare.

However, after some underwhelming displays earlier in the campaign, Roscommon have bucked up as the margin for error diminished and can stop Cavan’s four-game winning streak.

Tonight, CORK can end their relegation fears and move into the promotion places with a win over CLARE. They should do just that.

The comments of

manager Liam Kearns earlier this week would suggest that, with his side now safe and Division One football “not all it’s cracked up to be”, the dressing room will be considerably more wound up ahead of their meeting at Pairc Esler tomorrow.

Having lost their two home games already, Down can ill-afford a third defeat as they sit only a point above the relegation zone. Their greater need should see them over the line.

While MEATH have struggled of late, there’s rarely been a better time for them to travel to Drogheda, where they look set to confirm their neighbours

immediate return to Division Three.
