Two more energy firms hike prices in further costs blow for Irish households

- BY PAT FLANAGAN

PANDA and Pinergy are the latest suppliers to hike energy prices, it was confirmed yesterday.

Panda Power announced it will increase its electricity bill by 5.9% and its gas costs by 5%.

The rises will see the annual charges rise by around €48 and €32 respectively.

Pinergy’s hike is even higher, with a 9.38% jump in its electricity price adding around €72 a year to the average bill.

The increases at the two firms start from August 1.

Energia, SSE Airtricity, Flogas Electric Ireland have already raised rates in the past month.

The companies claim they reference to his dramatic final save in the penalty shootout. The toast across the land was to “our victory” - and to “Lev Yashin”, also a goalie and their greatest ever player.

Russia, the lowest ranked team in the competition, will now meet Croatia in Sochi on Saturday.

Russia’s captain Akinfeev, 32, said: “Not just our fans, but fans of other countries are getting a sense of this atmosphere. Russians know how to play football and want to play football.” have been forced to up prices due to the rising cost of gas and oil on the wholesale markets.

Comparison website Switcher.ie warned with just 10 energy suppliers in the market it is likely the remaining four will unveil similar hikes.

Boss Eoin Clarke said: “The price increases are coming thick and fast now, with these announcements bringing the total amount of suppliers who are raising their prices to six.

“There are only 10 energy suppliers in the market, and it’s likely we’ll see the remaining four announce similar hikes.

“Any increase in energy prices is really bad news for consumers, especially when you consider energy is a household essential we can’t live without.

“The average dual fuel bill for standard tariffs already stands at almost €1,800 per year, which makes up a big chunk of many households’ outgoings. “Anyone who hasn’t switched to a new energy supplier in the last year is on what’s known as a standard tariff, which means there are huge savings to be made by switching. The average household could save hundreds of euro by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest deals, which could go a long way towards offsetting the damage that will be done with these price hikes.”

Panda Power boss Brendan Traynor said the company had no other option but to increase their prices.

He added: “While we have done everything we can to offset the effect of market volatility on our customers, we have had to take this necessary action and reflect the market changes in our energy prices.”
