MAY’S BREXIT PLAN BY END OF THIS WEEK

Border issue could be days away from being solved

- BY PAT FLANAGAN

BRITAIN’S Brexit plan might be in place by the end of the week but it could result in splitting Theresa May’s government – or even bringing it down.

The UK Prime Minister is set to propose a deal at a make-or-break Cabinet meeting on Friday.

It was reported her advisers have come up with a proposal for handling customs with the EU after Brexit.

If this is accepted by Brussels it could help solve the border issue.

At what is expected to be a stormy meeting, UK senior ministers will discuss the plan at Chequers, the Prime Minister’s country retreat.

But yesterday leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-mogg warned Ms May must deliver what she promised or risk the collapse of her government.

He said: “Theresa May must stand firm. At Chequers she must stick to her righteous cause and deliver what she has said she would, she must use her undoubted grace to persevere.”

Tory Party infighting over Europe intensified yesterday with Mr Rees-mogg insisting he was “confident” the UK Prime Minister would deliver the Brexit she had promised.

This entails the UK leaving the single market and customs union and being outside the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. He warned Ms May that backsliding could result in splitting the party.

It is believed her negotiators will present the Cabinet with what is understood to be a version of the Norwegian model.

This entails a single market within the framework of the old European free trade area which is referred to as the European Economic Area. However, there is a chance this option will be rejected by the EU’S chief negotiator Michel Barnier, increasing the chances of a hard Brexit which would see Britain leaving the EU without a deal.
