Murder probe starts over missing woman Man, 40, arrested as gardai help PSNI in search for tragic Saoirse
GARDAI are helping the PSNI with a murder investigation following the disappearance of a young woman.
Saoirse Smyth, from Belfast, was reported missing in December.
The 28-year-old was last seen in Omeath, Co Louth – where she had been living – in April 2017.
She was spotted in Belfast at around the same time but had not been in contact with her family.
On Wednesday, a 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Newry, Co Down. He was released on bail last night. Det Chief Insp Geoff Boyce of the PSNI said yesterday: “The investigation into Saoirse’s disappearance has progressed and I now believe the potential exists for Saoirse to have been murdered.
“She had very distinctive red hair and has not had any contact with her family or friends, including on significant dates such as her birthday and Christmas, and this is very unusual.
“Saoirse also hasn’t responded to any of Saoirse Smyth her family’s pleas on social media. Her last movements in April 2017 can be traced to Omeath, where she was living at that time.
“We are working closely with our colleagues in An Garda Siochana and an address in Omeath is currently being searched.”
In a statement, Saoirse’s family said: “Somebody out there must know something about what has happened and we would plead with anyone who knows anything to contact the police. And Saoirse, if you are out there, please contact your family and let us know you are OK.”
A Garda spokesman confirmed officers were helping with the inquiry.
He added: “A house in Omeath is being examined by personnel from the Garda Technical Bureau and door-todoor inquiries are being conducted.
“An Garda Siochana is asking anyone who has any information in relation to the disappearance of Ms Smyth to contact the incident room in Dundalk at 042 938 8470 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.”
