Man arrested over fatal stabbing

STELLA the sniffer dog helped smash a drug smuggling operation as Customs found 2kg of cannabis “jelly sweets”.

The illegal items were seized at Portlaoise Mail Centre in Co Laois.

A total of 50 grams of herbal cannabis were also sniffed out yesterday in a parcel declared as “beauty products”.

The package originated in the US and was destined for delivery in Dublin.

The suspect, in his 40s, was held after 24-year-old Patrick O’connor was injured at Fitzgerald’s Bar in Sexton Street North, Limerick, on Saturday night.

Gardai investigat­ing the incident said the deceased was found in a critical condition before midnight. The victim, who was from the Thomondgat­e area, €11,000. Revenue officers also found a separate batch containing 600 grams of herbal cannabis in the mail centre.

The €12,000 haul was sent from Spain and concealed in “coffee products”.

Meanwhile, 50,000 unstamped cigarettes worth €30,000 were seized in North Tipperary on Friday.

The brands seized included EM@IL and Richman.

A man in his 40s was questioned and a file is being prepared for DPP.

Herbal, cannabis, left, and cigarettes was taken to hospital but died around an hour later. RTE reported last night that a murder investigat­ion had been launched.

Meanwhile, management of Fitzgerald’s paid tribute to Mr O’connor. A Facebook post read: “We were all very fond of Pa here at Fitzgerald’s. We are all devastated by what happened but are heartened by the support expressed by our local community and beyond.”
