Is Michael D man for another go?

-

PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has finally announced he is going to run for a second term.

For the last few weeks he has left the public and other potential candidates, waiting to know what his intentions are.

One presidential hopeful has even come out and blasted him for “manipulating” the process so he gets a second term.

Gerard Craughwell said he is angry at the fact that President Higgins waited until yesterday to let his intentions be known.

Nobody is saying he has not done a great job in his current role.

He has represented his country impeccably on the national and international stage.

However, you have to ask how capable he will be of carrying out a second term.

If he manages to win a second term he will be pushing 84 by the time it comes to an end.

Is this too old for someone in that position? The role involves a lot of travelling and public engagements and people are questioning if, at his age, it will be an easy task.

He also stated from the offset that he only ever intended to run for one term in 2011 and is now seeking a second. It can be argued it is not fair on those who had their sights set on taking over.

At the end of the day it will be the public who decide who will become the next President.

The public appears to love Michael D and what he has done during his time in the position and it’s likely that anyone who goes up against him will have a very tough task at hand.
