Louth gain ground in home bid
LOUTH are progressing towards delivering a much-needed county ground with potential sites believed to have been identified.
Earlier this year plans to redevelop the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda were shelved, leading to much frustration locally given how far short their current home falls of modern standards.
LMFM reported the county board, DKIT and Louth County Council have been in discussions about building on a site adjacent to the DKIT Sports Dome in
Dundalk, with other possible locations also on the table.
While not confirming the speculation, county board chairman Des Halpenny said: “Our progress has been very good since March.”
That was when the Drogheda plans were scrapped.
He added: “I know that was very disappointing for the GAA people of Louth.
“But we had to explore the feasibility of developing Drogheda and bring it to a head one way or the other, and that’s exactly what we did.
“But once one door closed, other doors opened and a number of options presented themselves in relation to developing an alternative location for a county grounds.
“So these included greenfield sites and developing existing club grounds. So we’ve been busy working away in the background and that’s the way it has to be at this point.
“Personally speaking it’s always been very high on my own agenda to progress the matter and it’s our intention to have a very clear direction, and location, for a county venue very shortly and finding a home all Louth GAA people deserve and one we can all be proud of.”
