No Vard feelings for Matt

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

JAMIE VARDY has apologised to Irish international Matt Doherty for the horror challenge that saw the England striker sent off.

In his first game back after the World Cup, Vardy clashed with Doherty in the second-half of Leicester’s 2-0 win over new boys Wolves on Saturday.

He won the ball in a hefty challenge but the Ireland defender ended up in a heap and was left feeling the pain.

Doherty said: “It’s fine,

I’ve just got stud marks down the inside of my leg. But my leg wasn’t planted, which is beneficial.

“It could have been worse. I could see it coming so I rode with it.

“Jamie knocked in (to the dressing room) and asked if everything was all right. There’s no hard feelings. He’s apologised so that’s the end of it.”

Wolves held Everton to a 2-2 draw on the opening day of the season but face freescoring Manchester City this weekend.

And Doherty – who scored an own goal against Leicester – knows they could get left behind if they don’t make the most of their chances in the “ruthless” Premier League.

“The League is ruthless and we need to come to terms with that,” he said.

“If we don’t take our chances the ball can end up in the back of our net. We need to learn quickly.

“There are definitely lessons to learn going forward and a lot of improvements to make – it’s relentless, every game is lose-able.

“You have to be at 100 per cent otherwise you won’t win. It could easily have been six points from six but it’s one.”
