Hothead gangster with a twisted lust for murder
FAT Freddie Thompson has been involved in two feuds that have killed upwards of 30 people and is suspected of being directly linked to several murders.
The 37-year-old, who has trimmed down on remand, was also known as a hot head with a twisted bloodlust.
It is believed the gangster, who started out as a low-level, aggressive teen thug, has never pulled the trigger but instead acted a quasi-commander of each killing.
A senior investigator said: “Freddie has always been a mouthy type – most big players play a game with gardai, they are polite and businesslike in their dealings but not Fatty.
“Freddie always became aggressive – there’s a famous story of him as a young fella telling guards he was going to be the next John Gilligan.”
He gravitated from low-level idiot to serious drug dealing crime when he hooked up with other criminals with connections to George “The Penguin” Mitchell.
In the late 1990s and early noughties he was making his way in the world of Dublin’s gangland, surrounding himself with a cadre of young thugs.
They were violent and led a campaign of terror in their communities. He notched up his first conviction

aged 16 and that began a regular cycle of visits to the children’s court to face charges on road traffic and public order offences.
As a teen he drove a car at a garda in an effort to help his pal avoid arrest.
In August 2001, Thompson found himself at the centre of one of Dublin’s most violent feuds as he and his pals went to war with the Rattigan gang.
Brian “King Rat” Rattigan stabbed one of Freddie’s pals Declan Gavin to death outside a kebab shop in Crumlin, South Dublin.
Rattigan was screaming that the 20-year-old thug was an informer – it was all over a drug deal gone wrong.
King Rat would later be jailed for the murder but before that there would be 16 murders in what was the city’s bloodiest gangland feud.
The Crumlin-drimnagh turf war was the baptism of violent terror in which Thompson changed from a moronic young thug to a full-blown murderer.
Rattigan was targeted and shot in the chest but the chunky gangster miraculously cheated death.
A source said: “It is believed Freddie has been a direct suspect in at least four murders but there could be much more than that.
“In one killing there was hard evidence linking him to one of the deaths but the problem was the DPP would not run with it in a judge and John Gilligan Brian Rattigan George ‘The Penguin’ Mitchell
Gang boss Christy Kinahan jury court.” Thompson’s focus was on getting rich – but lacked the intelligence to do it by himself.
But he came across the Kinahan cartel and knew Daniel Kinahan very well.
Thompson organised a drug shipment and went to Holland to collect the consignment but unfortunately for him, the Dutch police were waiting. Cops lifted him with other Irish suspects but their arrest was flawed and the case collapsed.
This emboldened Thompson and he continued to be cock of the walk back home in Dublin.
But that arrogance caused him problems.
The INLA was eyeing his growing patch of drug dealing and the terror group decided to target him.
A source explained: “They were just simply going to kill him – that was their plan but that was stopped when a guard intercepted the gunman.
“Freddie freaked out and vanished – spending time in the UK, Spain and Holland.
“He linked up on a more permanent basis with the Kinahans but he was acting the d***head and was fighting and drawing attention to himself with gardai. The guards warned him about threats against him and it affected him. He heeded the warnings and started to wear a bullet-proof vest.
“As this developed, Daniel Kinahan brought him to Spain where he was given jobs of sourcing guns and cars for jobs.”
While over in Spain, in the Kinahan heartland of Marbella, he was well in but his temper led him down a path that saw him repeatedly fall foul of
