WESTERNERS WANT JACK
MAYO chiefs have been in contact with Jack O’connor about the managerial position left vacant this week by Stephen Rochford.
O’connor (right), 57, is in the running to take charge of the Kerry senior footballers for the third time
following Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s departure.
Since 2012 he has guided the Kingdom to five underage All-ireland titles – two in three years with the Kerry minors, two in two years with the under-21s and also one with the under-20s.
At senior level, O’connor managed Kerry to All-ireland titles in 2004, ‘06 and ‘09, but it is unclear if he is the man most wanted by the Kerry county board to take over from Fitzmaurice.
Meanwhile, Jim Mcguinness has ruled himself out of contention – while James Horan has also distanced himself from it.
Speaking on Newstalk last night, former Donegal supremo Mcguinness said: “Not at the moment, definitely not,” when asked if he was interested in a return to Gaelic Football management. “I’m ready to take a managerial position [in soccer],” he said.
Former boss Horan said: “I would say for me personally, no. I’ve so much going on at the moment.”
Meanwhile, All-ireland ladies club champions Carnacon have won their appeal against their Mayo league and championship expulsion.
