Lotto mum to help her kids buy a house

- BY CORMAC O’SHEA BY LAURA LYNE

National Lottery A MOTHER is going to help her kids buy their own houses after winning more than €330,000 in the Lotto.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, will use her newfound wealth to give her children a leg up in the expensive Dublin housing market.

She won the Lotto Match 5 + bonus prize after buying her Quick Pick ticket at Gaskins Centra Store in Glasnevin.

The woman said: “This win is definitely for my children more than anything. I see young people struggling all of the time to buy a house, especially in Dublin.

“I’ve always hoped I could give them money towards a deposit.

“They’ve already started house-hunting.” Gardai are determined to smash the Kinahan cartel and expect more convictions after “Fat Freddie” Thompson was jailed for life.

The 37-year-old killer was handed the mandatory life sentence on Thursday for his part in the murder of

David “Daithi” Douglas.

Assistant Garda Commissioner John O’driscoll said officers and the Criminal Assets Bureau are determined to crush the Kinahan and Hutch gangs involved in a spate of recent murders.

He told RTE’S Morning Ireland: “It [Douglas murder] is just one of a number of unfortunate incidents where people were murdered by the criminal gangs involved in the feud.

“Fortunately we have intervened successfully in excess of 50 cases where there was threat to life and yesterday resulted in the conviction of a person in relation to one of those murders.

“But it follows on from a number of Gary Hutch david douglas other convictions. We had a conviction in June of James Quinn in Spain in relation to the murder of Gary Hutch.

“There was a conviction in January in relation to the murder of Michael Barr at Sunset House.

“We have had convictions in relation to the seizing of firearms in Greenogue, in relation to 10 revolvers, pistols, sub-machine guns, assault rifles.

“So we’re now in a phase of achieving convictions in relation to the many interventions we have made and Mirror yesterday where the investigations

of murder have come to a successful conclusion.”

Mr O’driscoll said gardai want to convict all the people involved in the vicious gangland murders in which 18 men have been shot dead.

He added: “In this case, we may not have convicted the person who, it may be alleged, fired the shot, so to speak.

“But that also follows on from a similar conviction in Spain in June where the Spanish law enforcement authorities achieved a conviction in relation to James Quinn.

“In that scenario also it would have been a combination of circumstantial evidence.

“So it is not unusual, but clearly we’re determined to discover all people involved in the murders concerned and bring all of them to justice.

“Whether they’re the people who fired a shot, or played some other significant role in organising a murder.”

The Assistant Commissioner said they are working with CAB to stop the financial gain gangs get from the illegal handling of drugs and firearms.

He added: “Our approach to gangland murder and our approach to tackling the gangland activity is first of all to prioritise threat-to-life incidents and attempt to intervene before a murder takes place and that has resulted in us intervening in 53 occasions.

“We are also determined to seize the drugs involved and we’ve seen numerous significant seizures in recent days, and to discover the firearms they are using. “We have not only seized those firearms but now reached a stage where there are convictions.

“We also combined with the activity of the Criminal Assets Bureau to tackle the financial gain the criminals are making from their endeavours.

“So there is a determination on our part to dismantle all the criminal gangs involved and we’re in for the long haul. “It has hit a phase of success in terms of achieving convictions but we won’t be resting on our laurels.

“We’ll be continuing into the future until we can actually say we have dismantled groups who are determined to kill in these circumstances. “I think our combined efforts will ensure the success achieved yesterday and on a number of occasions recently will continue into the future.”

He also said despite expectations Thompson will appeal his conviction, gardai are moving on to nab the next target. assistant Commissioner John O’driscoll
