FORMER X Factor star Mary Byrne has told how a health scare prompted her to lose almost five stone.

The 58-year-old appeared on the TV talent show in 2010 alongside One Direction, finishing in fifth place.

Appearing on ITV’S Loose Women yesterday ahead of the new series of the X Factor launch airing tonight, she revealed her slimmer new look.

Host Kaye Adams commented on Mary’s appearance straight away, saying: “Your hair looks fabulous, your skin looks fabulous.”

The Dubliner revealed she had chronic arthritis, which has improved since she had lost the weight, and she was no longer on cholestero­l tablets.

Mary said: “While I was on The X Factor they diagnosed me with an underactiv­e thyroid.”

It was after discoverin­g her had been failing, she decided something about it”.

Mary, who gave up her job in Tesco Ballyfermo­t to pursue singing, went on a show that saw her try out various diets for a month. She stuck to one and lost four-and-a-half stone.

And yesterday viewers flocked to Twitter to compliment her new image.

One tweeted: “Omg Mary Byrne looks amazing. What a legend of a woman.”

While another posted: “Mary, you look fab my love.”
