STARS UNDER RADAR COULD BE SOLUTION

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

MARTIN O’NEILL says he could take a closer look at some of Ireland’s highflying U19s in a desperate bid to turn his own team’s fortunes around.

Teenage strikers Troy Parrott of Tottenham and Norwich City’s Adam Idah are just two of Tom Mohan’s underage squad with potentially big futures ahead of them.

Mohan’s charges yesterday secured top spot in their European Championship qualifying group after a 2-1 win over Holland.

And O’neill said: “It is a consideration to have a look at them and even bring them into training.”

But the Ireland manager (below) rounded on Harry Arter last night for needlessly conceding the free-kick from which Harry Wilson scored a screamer.

Back in the fold after making himself unavailable for last month’s games after his bust-up with Roy Keane, he started both games in this double-header. But he was booked for a rash challenge against Denmark on Saturday

and while he escaped a card last night, his foul on Connor Roberts cost Ireland dear.

O’neill fumed: “I’ve not seen it back but I said to the players that if they go to ground on the edge of the penalty area, or in it, you make certain you get the ball.

“It has cost us,” he added. “I’m naturally disappointed as we put in a bit of effort tonight and we were certainly not short on endeavour.

“We started brightly and should have been a goal in front. I thought Cyrus Christie played very well again and maybe he should have scored.

“But we were very strong in the last 25-minutes when we were a goal behind. Overall, there are positive things to take out the game.

“I’m delighted with the endeavour but endeavour alone is not enough.

“Maybe next month we might have some major players back but some of the younger lads who played tonight, that was a learning curve and can stand them in good stead.”

O’neill was referring to the likes of Callum Robinson and Aiden O’brien who took the fight to Wales in the final third for the hour they played.

“I didn’t think we stood back tonight,” he said. “But the one major problem we have is trying to score a goal.

“We have to carve out more chances to do so. We conceded
