Susie Blue really does Care about quite a lot

- By EMMA MCMENAMY

Indie-rocker Susie Blue (above) has released a special edition of her debut album Didn’t Mean To Care.

The collection of songs, which is driven by shoe-gaze guitar sounds and synth-pop melodies, was released on October 11 and features indie queer anthem, People Like Us.

Speaking about the album, the Derry native, who has performed at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic and Other Voices, said: “This album is a collection of songs portraying the story of my teenage years after coming out, the title refers to the many times I didn’t mean to care about people or things but I couldn’t help myself.

“A lot of the songs are about my relationships with past girlfriends, some good and some bad, but I hope people will bring their own interpretations and feelings to them too.”

She added: “People Like Us was written about LGBTQ+ inequality because that’s a subject very close to my heart.

“Looking around at the current situation for LGBTQ+ rights in Northern Ireland I don’t feel much has changed since first releasing the song.

“I think about the younger generation and hope that somehow they can find comfort in my music knowing that they are not alone in their struggles for acceptance and equality.”

She added: “The album ‘Didn’t mean to care’ has been a very long time in the making, some of the songs are eight years old, but they all

tell a story of where I was and what I was doing at the time, the order of the album is meant to take you on that journey I guess.

“People Like Us is my favourite song to play live, because the lyrics in the chorus resonate with people, they become interactive and it’s so special when people sing along.

“I have some nice gigs to play between now and Christmas and I look forward to releasing some new material and touring in 2019.”

Susie Blue is set to play a specially curated gig by top BBC 1 DJ Phil Taggart in Portrush on Friday, November 16.
