€35m boost for Cork as 50,000 head to jazz fest

Laura Mvula CORK received a €35million cash injection at the weekend as more than 50,000 revellers flocked to the Guinness Jazz Festival.

More than 1,000 musicians from 20 countries participat­ed in the festival this year including Laura Mvula, Billy Childs All Star Quartet and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Director Sinead Dunphy said one of the strengths of the three-day event is it has something for everyone.

She added: “A lot of people go, ‘Oh I don’t like jazz’. And you say, ‘What type of jazz do you not like because you have all the variations.

“Jazz is the overarchin­g genre and you have all these sub genres – soul, gospel, funk, classical and contempora­ry. There is a really interestin­g mix. “

Ms Dunphy told Cork Live TV she was honoured to have been given the opportunit­y to book her musical favourites of many years.

She added that she began the huge undertakin­g of organising the festival in January.

Ms Dunphy said she plans to have a short break before throwing herself back in to organising the programme for 2019.

X Factor judge Robbie Williams was left furious with wife Ayda Field after he blamed her for sending one of his acts home.

The star was “seething” when Ayda sent the vote to deadlock rather than keeping LMA Choir on Sunday night’s Virgin Media One show. Public votes saved Louis Tomlinson’s act Brendan Murray instead.
