Mcdonald only part of success

- BY PAUL KEANE

WEXFORD star Conor Mcdonald is not taking all the credit for Naomh Eanna’s big breakthrough.

The two-time All-star nominee has helped the Gorey outfit to the last four of the AIB Leinster club hurling Championship after a maiden county title.

They’d never even contested a Wexford final before last month but then beat Camross on Sunday to set up a clash with Henry Shefflin’s Ballyhale.

It’ll be the ultimate David versus Goliath encounter but Ballyhale boss Shefflin will have his homework done on Mcdonald in particular though the fullforward feels that could play into Naomh Eanna’s hands.

Mcdonald said: “I’ve been saying it all year – I don’t think our forwards are getting enough credit as a group. I’ve never seen just one forward win a county final.

“Against Camross, Padraig Doyle chipped in with some vital scores, David O’brien had 2-2 score in the first-half alone.”

Eanna will be boosted for Sunday week’s last four encounter by the return of another county forward, Cathal Dunbar who missed the Camross game because of a controversial ban.

Mcdonald scored 1-1 himself against Camross but was outdone in scoring terms by O’brien and Doyle who contributed 2-11 between them.

Mcdonald said: “We had David O’brien who chipped in when Cathal would have been doing it all year. That’s the kind of strength of depth we have, not only on the field but also on the bench, that if we get a suspension or an injury then a lad steps up like that and scores 2-2.”
