Rain may scupper Bite bid

- BY DAVID YATES

MIGHT BITE may not run at Haydock in the Betfair Chase a fortnight tomorrow if the ground is too soft.

Trainer Nicky Henderson is readying the nine-year-old for a crack at the Jockey Club Chase Triple

Crown where a £1million prize is on offer to the winner of the Betfair Chase, King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.

Might Bite triumphed at Kempton prior to a brave Cheltenham Gold Cup second to Native River — who is likely to reappear at Haydock — and reports from Lambourn of the bay’s progress are positive.

However, Might Bite’s owner Simon Phillip said: “He’s absolutely sparkling in his work — he is as good as ever — but we are all looking at the skies.

“It could be on the heavy side of ‘heavy’ in the north west.

“The Gold Cup is the pinnacle but the King George is his real target, and we don’t want to spoil his chances there by running at Haydock if it’s heavy ground.”
