1965: ‘Sugar’ Ray Robin­son an­nounced his re­tire­ment from box­ing af­ter more than 25 years. 1970: Henry Cooper won the Euro­pean heavy­weight ti­tle (above for the third time when he stopped Jose Ur­tain of Spain in the ninth round. 1989: Snooker great Steve Davis suf­fered his big­gest de­feat in a fi­nal when he lost 9-1 to Stephen Hendry in the Duty Free Mas­ters in Dubai.

2014: David Moyes was named coach of Real So­ciedad af­ter be­ing sacked by Manch­ester United in April.
