Billing admits he had to search on FIFA to find out where Huddersfield played

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

PHILIP BILLING had never heard of Huddersfield when he joined them as a teenager from Denmark.

The midfielder did not recognise the names of any of their players when he looked them up on his beloved FIFA video game after his stepdad told him of their interest.

But he still jumped at the chance to move from Esbjerg in his homeland five years ago because they were in England, just a step away from his goal of the Premier League.

“My stepdad was just like there’s this team, Huddersfield Town, that are interested in you,” he said.

“At the time I was thinking I’d never heard of the club before, so I went on FIFA to see what players they had and if there was anyone I knew.

“I don’t think there was, but I saw Huddersfield was just below the Premier League, so I thought it can’t be a bad place.

“It was always my dream to play in England. I knew there was a Scottish scout who wanted me week’s trial.

“For me, I just knew it was England, so it was straightforward for me. I wanted to go, to be honest.”

It seems Billing, 22, made the right choice as the Denmark Under-21 star has emerged as one of the best talents in David Wagner’s side since his Terriers debut aged 17 in 2014.

He was the club’s Player of the Month for September when he scored a fine goal at Everton and his long throws are one of the Terriers’ principal weapons.

“It’s about getting the minutes in for me and playing well,” said Billing ahead of today’s clash with West Ham to come for a at the John Smith’s

Stadium.

“It’s a long season and we still have to grind hard and work hard, but for sure

I’m happy with my start to the season.

“Personally, I wish we had a few more points on the board, but I’m sure they will come.”
