Yates ‘West’ of the mark as he hits out over Kenny
Ivan Yates IVAN Yates was left with egg on his face after weighing in on the new Ireland managerial set-up.
The former politician questioned the credentials of Stephen Kenny who will take over from new boss Mick Mccarthy in 2020.
Kenny has led Dundalk to four league titles in the past five seasons.
The former minister said on his Newstalk show: “We must remember we reached the summit of our achievement in international soccer during 1995 back to 1986 when we went out and got one of the best most internationally famous managers in Jack Charlton.
“He had been in the ’66 World Cup final. He had worn that T-shirt. What international experience does Stephen Kenny have? I submit, none.
“What pedigree does he have when you are taking on the might of West Germany or Argentina or getting to a finals?”
Social media users latched on to Yates’ reference to West Germany – a team that has not existed for close to 30 years.
Ex-northern Ireland and Celtic player Paddy Mccourt joked: “God help Ireland if they have to come up against, ‘The might of West Germany’.”
Another user said: “Ivan Yates really needs to keep his soccer opinions to himself.” IT looks like Helena Bonham Carter has really clicked with her co-star Ben Daniels as they film Netflix drama The Crown. The actress snapped him on her phone and they took selfies while they larked about in an open-top car on a shoot for the third series.
Helena, 52, is playing Princess Margaret while Ben, 54, plays her husband Lord Snowdon – the society photographer Tony Armstrong-jones.
The Crown, which starred Vanessa Kirby, 30, as Margaret in its second run, returns to screens next year. REAL DEAL Margaret & Lord Snowdon Stars laugh as they lark in car
