THE STEAKS ARE TOO HIGH
Saved.. steer so massive abattoirs can’t handle it
SAVED by bovine intervention... this beefy fella has dodged the slaughterhouse because he is simply too big to handle.
At 6ft 4in, Knickers the 220st steer stands head and shoulders above the rest of the herd.
But when owner Geoff Pearson tried to auction the Holstein Friesian last month, meat processors did not mince their words.
They said there was only so much capacity at the abattoir and Knickers would more than fillet. And that’s how lucky Knickers avoided the knacker’s yard. Geoff said: “So we thought let’s leave him here, he’s not hurting anyone.”
Seven-year-old Knickers will now live out the rest of his life in the paddock. Geoff bought the steer for €250 around six years ago as a “coach” to lead other cattle.
The newcomer made friends with a Brahmin steer known as Bra – so was soon dubbed Knickers.
Farmer Geoff said: “He was always a standout steer from the others, a bit bigger than the rest. But we never thought he would turn into a big Knickers.”
The rest of Geoff ’s herd all look up to him at the feedlot in Myalup, south of Perth, Australia.
He is thought to be the biggest steer in Oz – but the world record is held by Italian rival Bellino who was 6ft 7in when measured in 2010.
