Jose’s €17m Xmas bonus
Manager adds Man utd’s €16.7m to his payoff totals
SACKED Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho walked away with €16.7million yesterday – taking his “golden goodbyes” total in English football to around €47million.
The Special One was already laughing all the way to the bank after twice being sacked by Chelsea and receiving in excess of €30million.
The Blues were said to have paid him €20million in 2007 and €10.5million in 2015.
The 55-year-old Portuguese signed a new deal with United in January which was worth a reported €384,000 a week and due to run until June 30, 2020.
With United still in the Champions League, he was guaranteed a bumper pay off.
Die-hard fans admitted there was no way Mourinho could hang on to his job after falling out with the club’s top players.
He spent almost €445million on players, yet recorded the club’s worst start to a Premier League season since 1990/91.
The club announced Mourinho’s departure after a 9am meeting with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward.
It said in a statement: “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future.”
Three hours later, he was
driven to the plush Lowry Hotel, where he has stayed for his twoand-a-half years in Manchester.
Many fans suggested that it was a sign he had not settled in the city. But he told the BBC: “I live in a fantastic apartment... so don’t feel sorry for me.”
The usual room rate of €900 would have taken his total bill for around 900 days to €806,000.
He said “bye guys” as he left for London, where he will spend Christmas with his wife Matilde, 54, his daughter, also Matilde, 22, and his son Jose Jnr, 18.
Their base is a six-bedroom house in Belgravia which he bought for €7.2million but is now worth €27million.
Mourinho is said to own a property portfolio worth close to €55million, thought to include a property at Lake Como in Italy. The family have lived in Portugal, Spain and Italy but like Britain because the children are settled here.
The coach has also raked in money from deals with brands such as Heineken and Adidas.
We would like to thank Jose for his work and wish him every success in the future
