On The Pulse

- NIALL REDMOND

Straight into 2019, and all the massive NYE parties are fresh in the memory and the hangover is as financial as it is physical. January has traditionally been a quiet month or somewhat a month off for promoters to re-group and most likely take a rest before gearing up for the spring.

Opening weekend in January is locals weekend as a result it seems, as District 8 hosts Kettama tomorrow night. After a monumental breakthrough year which saw Kettama (real name Evan Campbell) extensively tour Europe and make his debut in Asia, not to mention a plethora of critically acclaimed releases – he is straight back into things for 2019 at District 8 for his final appearance before the venue closes at the end of this month.

Kettama (inset) has quickly become one of the Ireland’s leading lights when it comes to house music. Viral fame came via his catchy hit ‘3am’ which was featured on Youtube channel Moskalus and then later in his Four Four premiered, Wu-tang clan sampled track, Raw Cuts.

Support slots for X-coast, DJ Seinfeld and Mall Grab have earned him praise from some of the genres fastest up and coming artists, with Mall Grab playing out some unreleased material from the Galway native at a sold out Shine in Belfast(where funnily enough he plays tonight) Support is from Mark Laird.admission is €20 and doors are 11pm.

After a sell-out NYE show, Will Kinsella takes to the helm at PYG presumably before he heads back to Berlin where has been based since late last year. Hybrasil his live project as done big things all throughout 2018 and surely will again in 2019 but tomorrow he has his DJ hat on as opposed to the machines and live PA vibe. Joined by Sexshop on the night as well in the vaults – admission is only €10.

Finally Jonathan Kiely aka Kaily, hosts a free night at the Button factory billed as Kaily and friends. Joining him on stage are Michael Kelly, ross Mooney and Eimear Gorman with an eclectic array of dance music on the menu.

Lastly tonight, Flipside’s Mark Murphy takes his vinyls down to the awesome Izakaya basement on George’s Street where he is bringing the joyful noise all night long – doors open at 11pm in the basement and it’s free in.
