NOEL: JUDGE LIAM ON RESULTS

- BY PAT NOLAN

TIPPERARY’S Noel Mcgrath says Liam Sheedy should be judged on what he does going forward rather than on past achievements.

Sheedy’s return to the Tipp hotseat eight years after he vacated it on the back of the 2010 All-ireland success has enthused the county’s followers that major honours will return following last year’s hugely disappointing Championship showing.

Sheedy (left) admitted himself last week that intercounty management has moved on significantly while he has been away but Mcgrath, who made his debut under the Portroe man in 2009, believes he has moved with the times.

He said: “He’s a smart man, he knows the game inside out. He would have been following it, he would have been involved with different club teams over the last few years, he did a bit with Antrim last year as well so he has definitely kept in touch.”

Tipp go to Wexford on Sunday having beaten Clare decisively before Limerick sent them packing.

Mcgrath added: “I suppose it has been up and down, we had a win and a loss. It’s still very early in the year, there’s a lot of work to be put in yet.

“We’re coming from a position where we didn’t get out of the Munster group last year in the Championship. So look we have a lot to work on, to get our game up to the level that will be acceptable in the Championship.

“At the same time, there’s good work going in, we had good patches and we’d be hoping to bring those forward for the rest of the League.”
