IN THE AIR

to speed with all of the proposals. It is understood discussions have taken place with broadcasters and, if the competition is deemed a success, an expansion and multi-year deal could materialise.

The NIFL said: “The NI Football League note the announcement regarding the potential formation of a new competition.

“We were aware that initial discussions had taken place between the IFA and FAI but did not expect any formal announcements at this stage.

“We look forward to consultation and receiving further detail regarding this opportunity which we will consider with our member clubs.”

And the IFA said: “While nothing has been confirmed at this stage, discussions about a potential new cross-border game between the NIFL Premiership champions and the winners of the League of Ireland have been going on for the past few months.

“The IFA welcomes exploring the format which could bring substantial revenues for the clubs involved both in terms of prize money and gate receipts. The IFA will continue to work to ensure therefore that any new competition works for the good of clubs and the league in Northern Ireland.” There has been no cross-border competition in Ireland since the Setanta Cup was abolished in 2014 after nine years.

Gavin said: “A good few clubs had previously asked if there was any sign of the Setanta Cup coming back or anything like that. It’s something we’ve always been looking at.

“John Delaney has been working closely with the IFA. This suggestion was brought to us, would we try just the two teams initially.

“And the feedback from the clubs from both sides has been very positive. I think it gives us something that has been missing a little bit.”

Quizzed on the prospect of expanding the competition – if it happens – Gavin said: “I wouldn’t rule it out. The Setanta Cup, I think, initially started off as a one-match thing. I don’t know if this will go that way but I wouldn’t rule it out.”

But the November dates could turn into a logistical nightmare for clubs. Unlike the League of Ireland, the Irish League champions do contest the Scottish IRN BRU Cup, where games are played on a Saturday. November 7 is also a Europa League group stage date should a team get there. SOCCER REPUBLIC has been cut to a half-hour highlights show with no studio debate, it has been confirmed.

But RTE will show all Premier Division goals on a Friday night when they have a live game. Meanwhile, the FAI has confirmed there is no increase in prize money this season.

But League of Ireland clubs will continue to contest the Scottish IRN BRU Cup. Bohemians pulled out earlier this month when their quarter-final with East Fife was called off minutes before kick-off due to a frozen pitch.

Fran Gavin said: “They want us in it and we want to be there. That competition is going to grow.”
