Q&A

-

What does this latest defeat mean?

MPS were asked to give a fresh vote of confidence in Theresa May’s Brexit plan.

But a rebellion by 66 Tory Brexiteers saw the Commons reject the motion by 45 votes.

What happens now?

Mrs May has said she will press ahead with attempts to get an alternative arrangement to the Irish backstop.

But her chances of getting a significant concession, which were already slim, look increasingly remote

after last night’s defeat.

is a no-deal more likely?

This depends on what happens on February 27.

That is when MPS will vote on an amendment tabled by Labour’s Yvette Cooper that would rule out a no-deal.

A number of Tory ministers have said they will resign to vote for the amendment if a no-deal is looking likely.

Could there be a general election?

This remains a possibility but it is a huge risk for the Conservatives.

It would require the extension of Article 50 – delaying Brexit for some months.
