Learners are unfairly hit by car seizures law claims TD
8 cars seized a day LEARNER drivers are being unfairly treated with eight cars seized every day, a TD has claimed.
Garda revealed 337 vehicles have been towed away since laws were introduced in December targeting unaccompanied novice motorists.
Kerry TD Michael Healyrae told Sean O’rourke on RTE Radio 1: “Of course we don’t want to see any family lose a relative.
“But what our legislators did... they criminalised young people in rural areas particularly.
“You are on a waiting list to have a driving test and it would be far more to be campaigning to ensure when someone wants to be tested they can do so.”
However, Road Safety Authority chief Moyagh Murdock said the measure is vital to save lives.
She added: “It’s always been illegal to drive unaccompanied. But what has changed is there’s new penalties and the guards also got additional powers to seize a vehicle.
