1882: During England’s record 13-0 win over Ireland, Oliver Vaughton (five goals) and Arthur Brown (four) became the first England footballers to score hat-tricks in a full international. 1898: Enzo Ferrari, who created the most successful Grand Prix team in history, was born. A driver with Alfa Romeo, he quit racing at the end of 1929 and started manufacturing cars under the Scuderia Ferrari banner. He died in 1988.
1933: The first officially recognised world heavyweight boxing champion under Queensberry Rules, ‘Gentleman’ Jim Corbett, died at the age of 66.
1933: Sir Bobby Robson (above) was born. He managed Ipswich to
European success and took England to the 1990 World Cup semi-finals. He lost a long battle with cancer in July 2009.
