Hillsborough: Demand for Duckenfield to open gates
Mr Duckenfield HILLSBOROUGH match commander David Duckenfield authorised an exit gate to be opened to let fans into the stadium, a court heard.
Ex Sgt Michael Goddard, a radio operator in the police control box at 1989 FA Cup semi-final, said Duckenfield, and ground commander Bernard Murray discussed the number of fans outside.
Mr Goddard said a request from Supt Roger Marshall, in charge outside the Leppings Lane turnstiles, “was a demand, basically, open the gates”.
Duckenfield, 74, denies gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans. Ex-sheffield Wednesday secretary Graham Mackrell, 69, denies safety offences. The Preston crown court trial continues.
