Fionn can be perfect Fitz again for Kerry

-

LAST weekend served up some wonderful individual club displays – and none more so than that from the newly married Fionn Fitzgerald of Dr Crokes.

The reason l single him out is because the Kingdom have lacked a top class man marker to negate the opposition’s top marksmen.

He is one of the best in the business at this specialist art and last Saturday he marked Rian Brady, the best young forward to emerge in Longford for years.

He gave the young man a lesson in tight man-marking – and it’s one Rian will learn a lot from. Fitzgerald was virtually unbeatable.

If there’s a better man marker in Kerry then I’m a Dutchman. It was only last week Fionn himself said, “I’m done with Kerry” after being omitted from Peter Keane’s National League squad.

If l was Peter Keane this week I’d be buying a lovely little wedding present and heading for Fionn Fitzgerald’s house for a nice wee chat. ONE of the most unique individual battles took place on Saturday when Kevin Cassidy and Kieran Fitzgerald, two past county giants, went head to head in the club semi-finals.

Their aggregate age of 75 years must be a record at this level. They are a great example to all the young lads in their clubs.

To see Cassidy having such an impact at 37 years of age, with 1-2 from play and a number of assists, was a pleasure to watch.

They don’t make many guys like these anymore and once again it’s the club stage that allows legends like these to stay relevant and, indeed, they’re crucial to the further development and success of their clubs.
