Sod’s Llor is so hard to handle

-

LET’S give Tottenham the credit they deserve for ending Manchester City’s bid for the Quadruple.

To produce a performance, and result, like that without Harry Kane was a magnificent effort. And they were hit further by losing Moussa Sissoko to injury before half-time.

But I know why their fans were singing, “There’s only one VAR” at the Etihad.

In my opinion, Fernando Llorente’s goal that won the Champions League tie for Spurs should not have stood.

According to the letter of the law, in that competition, it was correctly awarded because Llorente (above) was not seeking to handle the ball deliberately. It took an involuntary deflection off his arm, on to his hip and into the back of the net.

How ironic that the rule changes on June 1 – the day of the final – so that even if the handball is not intentional, you cannot gain an advantage from it.

In other words, Llorente’s goal was a fair cop, according to the smallprint, in the quarterfinals – but next season it would have been disallowed. And I still don’t agree that Danny Rose can be penalised for handball in the first leg against City but Llorente’s critical goal which settled the tie is allowed to stand.

VAR may be making football fairer, but it’s still far from perfect.

It was supposed to clear everything up – but it’s only making parts of the game clearer.

For a start, fans in the stadium – who are paying top dollar – should be able to see the action that is being reviewed.

And when incidents are referred to VAR officials in their bunker, they should be able to see all available camera angles.

Footage from one angle of Llorente’s goal at the Etihad on Wednesday night, which showed the telling deflection off his arm, was circulating on social media within minutes of the game.

I’m sorry, but when the ball ends up in the net, for me that’s handball. Full stop. It should not have stood.

When VAR is rolled out in the Premier League next season, let’s make sure officials are given ALL the available evidence to make an informed decision.
