OUR SEASON DEMANDS A TROPHY

- BY CHRIS MCKENNA

GINI WIJNALDUM has urged Liverpool to deliver the trophy their sensational season deserves.

The Reds were pipped to the Premier League title by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City despite collecting 97 points and suffering just one defeat. But now Jurgen Klopp’s men have a chance to land a sixth European Cup next Saturday against Tottenham – and this time it is in their hands.

“Everyone is really focused and determined to win a trophy, especially because we’ve had a really good year,” said Dutch midfielder Wijnaldum (below).

“It was a great year with 97 points in the league but we didn’t end it as champions so that’s why we want to finish this season with a trophy.

“In the last game of the season we couldn’t control things because it wasn’t in our hands. Now it’s different.”

Liverpool beat Spurs twice in the league but at Anfield they needed a late mistake from Hugo Lloris (top) and an own goal from Toby Alderweireld (bottom) to seal three points. Wijnaldum said: “The two games we played against them were really tough – especially the second one. We won in the end but it could have gone differently in that game.

“Spurs are a really tough team. We never have an easy game against them so we know what we have to do.” Liverpool will finish their training camp in Marbella this weekend with a behindclosed-doors friendly before jetting back to the UK to continue preparations.

It will be three weeks since their last competitive action by the time of the final.

Midfielder Wijnaldum added: “The training sessions have gone well for everyone. We have had to come back into rhythm again after the few days we had off and so far it’s been good.”
