LIONS USE THEIR JED TO MAKE THE ROBINS’ FEATHERS FLY
O’dowda 84
Wallace 11, Cooper 70
JED WALLACE conjured up a goal and an assist as Millwall deservedly halted Britol City’s promotion push.
Gary Rowett’s team looked solid throughout against an out-of-sorts home side, but had to survive a late barrage.
Wallace (left) put them ahead in the 11th minute with a low right-footed shot from inside the box that lacked pace, but still beat
Dan Bentley at his near post. And any hopes of a City fightback looked over on 70 minutes when defender Jake Cooper rose above the home defence to head in a Wallace free-kick.
But substitute Callum O’dowda did pull a goal back with an 84th-minute shot that went in off a post and Millwall were forced to defend desperately in the closing stages. Goalkeeper
Bartosz Bialkowski saved with an outstretched leg to deny another substitute, Pedro Pereira, a stoppagetime equaliser
City’s first-half display was pedestrian and offered little threat apart from an early chance that fell to Andreas Weimann.
Capitalising on a defensive blunder, the Robins striker elected to round Bialkowski and then delayed his shot, having been driven wide.
From then on, Rowett’s three centre-back system worked a treat, even if his side had to ride their luck.
Cooper excelled in the air and City left their exciting rally after O’dowda’s goal too late
Before kick-off, both sets of fans had joined in a minute’s applause in support of injured City loan signing Benik Afobe, whose two-year-old daughter Amora passed away recently.
