Star takes hiatus after filming Little Women

-

SAOIRSE Ronan has revealed she has spent the last six months on a hiatus after more than a decade of film roles.

The actress, who has just been nominated for a Golden Globe, was on the chat show circuit in the US this week to promote Little Women before returning home for Christmas

The 25-year-old told Late Night With Seth Meyers that she had plenty of time to do her shopping this year because she took most of the year off.

She said: “I’m going back to Ireland for a bit. I’m preparing myself for the cold. I’m just going to sit in my pyjamas all day. It doesn’t change. I’m very boring.

“I’m organised because I’ve had more time this year. I basically haven’t worked in six months.

“I’ve had a lot of time on my hands, so I went online early and got a lot of presents a few months in advance.

“In [shops] there is too many people, it’s loud, it’s too bright, my back hurts. The [computer] is the modern way.”

And the star jokingly described how she enveloped Meryl Streep in a hug after their scene in Little Women.

She said: “I mean, She’s Meryl. I kept it together. She was very good at just coming on to set and not really having any airs and graces.

“It’s amazing she is such a legend and we all love her so much and she is still kind of like this jobbing actor.

“We were doing this scene and it was going well and we were having fun and at the end when they said they were moving to another scene, and it was my only scene with her, and I was like, ‘It’s over, my moment with Meryl is over’.

“I got really emotional and I was just thanking her for letting me act and stuff.

“I just sort of held her and didn’t let her go. I basically forced her into a hug and just said thank you.”

Meanwhile, when the Irish actress appeared on Today to promote Little Women with co-stars Eliza Scanlen and Florence Pugh, she expressed her surprise that Greta Gerwig failed to get a Best Director nod.

Saoirse said: “She has made one of the best movies of the year.

“Laura [Dern] made a really good point yesterday in that in a way it’s vital for something like this to happen because it reminds us of how far obviously we still need to go. [Greta is] a really brilliant filmmaker. We wouldn’t be here without her.”
