new Dublin senior football manager would be revealed at the annual gathering at Parnell Park, that appears increasingly unlikely.
With Gavin having only stepped down on November 30, the selection committee has not been able to move swiftly enough to meet tonight’s unofficial deadline.
Dessie Farrell appears to be the most likely to get the nod though he remains, for the time being at least, the Na Fianna senior football manager and has continued to put plans in place for their upcoming season.
2011 All-ireland winning boss Pat Gilroy has also been linked but it’s believed that the work commitments that forced him to step down as the county’s senior hurling manager last year haven’t subsided to a degree that would allow him to resume the role he vacated seven years ago.
Declan Darcy, Gavin’s long-time selector has been mentioned too but appears to be a long shot given his professional commitments.
Beyond that, two bookmakers stopped taking bets on former St Vincent’s manager Tommy Conroy succeeding Gavin last week but his appointment would still come as a shock.
However, it’s believed the board is keen for some form of continuity from the previous regime, which may see the likes of Jason Sherlock or Paul Clarke retained in some capacity.
But while there may be no appointment made tonight, it’s expected that county board chairman Sean Shanley or secretary John Costello will at least give a progress report, with the process likely to spill over into next week.
Dublin are back in action for a League opener against Kerry on January 25.
