MENTAL MO JUST WON’T QUIT SAYS HENDERSON

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

JORDAN HENDERSON says Mo Salah showed his incredible mental strength in guiding holders Liverpool to the Champions League knockout stages.

Salah missed with eight attempts on goal – four of them sitters – in Austria on Tuesday but then converted by far the hardest chance of the lot from an impossible angle to seal the 2-0 win over Red Bull Salzburg.

And Reds skipper Henderson, who provided the through-ball, said: “I can’t believe he scored the second one from that angle. It was a magnificent finish.

“He would probably have been wanting a couple more with the chances he had but he kept plugging away and was a threat all game.

“That he kept going is the most important thing. You are going to get chances and you are going to miss chances, that’s part of football. But he kept going and I don’t know how he scored the second goal. It was a great run and a magnificent finish but he was dangerous all night.”

Henderson believes the Champions League holders now have the resilience and experience needed to come through tricky away-day tests in Europe.

“We’ve had a lot of experience in the Champions League, it has gone to the last game the last few years and we’ve managed to come out on top, which is important,” the Kop captain added.

“We’ve dealt with it really well. We just have to do the same when we get to the knockout stages.

“Salzburg started so quickly but we kept defending well as a team throughout, and overall we deserved the win. We probably should have scored more, to be honest, because we played some great football.”
