CORNICK: WE MUST FIGHT OUR CORNER

- BY HECTOR NUNNS MOTM LYLE TAYLOR (CHARLTON)

CHARLTON LUTON

HARRY CORNICK says Luton must make Kenilworth Road a fortress to have any chance of staying up.

The rock-bottom Hatters are now six points from safety with 12 games left – and six of those are at home, including matches against fellow strugglers Stoke, QPR, Barnsley and Reading.

Cornick, 24, hit his eighth goal of the season in a damaging loss that saw a James Collins ‘goal’ wrongly ruled out for offside with the score at 1-1.

Next up for Graeme Jones’ men is a home clash with high-flying Brentford tomorrow, who beat them 7-0 in November.

Cornick said: “We need to improve quick, because we haven’t got many games to get the points needed to stay up.

“We really need to win on Tuesday night – and with the run-in we have, we really need to make Kenilworth Road a fortress.

“We need the fans to get behind us, and if we can win our home games we can stay up.”

Charlton striker Lyle Taylor (above) haunted Luton once again, with two more goals – one a penalty – to take his tally against them to seven in five games.

Lee Bowyer’s Addicks took a big step towards securing their Championship status with this win – and it was also a big day for George Lapslie. The 22-year-old came off the bench to provide an assist for the penalty and then score his first league goal.

Lapslie, whose partner is pregnant, was fined by his teammates for a ‘baby’ goal celebration involving sucking his thumb and putting the ball under his shirt. He said: “I will happily pay the fine.”
