Horror as teen girl car fan dies in crash
Tragic Roisin is 7th to be killed since Friday She was a beautiful, sweet girl. It’s a pure tragedy
A TEENAGE girl “who had a keen interest in cars” died in a horrific crash in the early hours of yesterday.
Roisin Hession, 16, was the seventh person to die on Irish roads in a weekend of carnage.
She was killed when the car she was travelling in smashed into a wall in Co Galway.
The collision happened at around 1.15am in the townland of Porridgetown in Oughterard.
Roisin was a passenger of the vehicle when it struck the wall. She died at the scene.
The driver of the car, a 21-year-old man yet to be named, was seriously injured in the crash.
Fine Gael councillor Peter
Roche said Roisin’s death is a shock to the local area.
He described her as “a beautiful, sweet girl, who had a long, good life ahead of her. It’s a pure tragedy”.
Roisin’s death is the second tragedy to hit her family in recent years.
Mr Roche told how her mum died a couple of years ago, adding: “The father is originally from Tuam, but they recently moved to the village of Cahergal, around five miles out.
“It must be the most awful thing for that man to lose his child.” Roisin was a student in a local Convent of Mercy secondary school. Mr Roche said: “Tomorrow brings a new challenge for the teachers to tell her friends and colleagues. They were preparing for their school exams, they’re preparing for a funeral now.”
Fianna Fail councillor Colm Keaveney said Roisin had a keen interest in cars. He said: “It’s just a tragic set of events. She was very popular among her friends and comes from a loving, well-respected family. There’s a lot of upset in the community.
“The father is a brilliant, wellrespected man.”
Roisin’s body was removed to the mortuary in University Hospital Galway, where a postmortem will take place.
A Garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai are appealing to any road users who may have travelled the road or drivers who may have dash cam, to call them in Salthill Garda station on 091 514720, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.”
There have been seven road deaths around the country since Friday evening.
Two men and a woman were killed in a two-vehicle crash at Carrickcarnan, Co Louth, in the early hours of Saturday.
In Co Monaghan a male pedestrian died when he was struck by a lorry on the N54 between Monaghan and Clones on Saturday morning.
And a man and woman in their 60s died in a crash involving a car and a jeep on the N55 in Ballinagh, Co Cavan.
