Iron Lady’s soft spot for Wogan with outfit names

Thatcher and Wogan

BROADCASTING legend Terry Wogan must have made a lasting impression on Margaret Thatcher as she named several of her outfits after him.

Newly-released documents have revealed Britain’s first female prime minister had a penchant for naming her clothes after world leaders.

Former US President Ronald Reagan was a top choice as was ex Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

But a 1990 diary entry record from the Margaret Thatcher Archive Trust showed she also was a fan of the late Limerick-born presenter.

The broadcasting icon, who interviewed Mrs Thatcher in January of that year for the BBC, had several outfits named after him, including a “Wogan Long” and a “Wogan Short”.

He also inspired the “Wogan Burgundy” which the late Tory leader wore to the Bank of England.

Chris Collins, from the Margaret Thatcher Archive Trust, said “only certain men” received the honour of having an outfit named after them by the Iron Lady.
