BRUTAL END TO YAFAI’S LONG REIGN

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

KAL YAFAI’S run as Britain’s longest-reigning world champion was ended in brutal fashion by Roman Gonzalez.

Yafai had ruled as WBA super-flyweight king since 2016 and was stopped in nine rounds by the Nicaraguan.

The Birmingham fighter was floored at the end of the eighth round in Frisco, Texas, before it was waved off in the ninth when he was put down again.

Yafai, 32, deserves huge credit for having the bravery to put his belt on the line against four-weight world champ Gonzalez.

TYSON FURY’S US promoter Bob Arum claims Deontay Wilder has officially triggered a rematch clause for a third fight in July. Wilder had 30 days to request a rematch after losing his WBC heavyweight title to Fury.

And Arum said the American’s team contacted him over the weekend. “They notified us that they have accepted the rematch,” he said. “It’s going to happen in the summer, middle of July.”
