Sick Boris taken to hospital as fears grow for his health
BORIS Johnson was admitted to hospital with coronavirus last night amid deepening worries for his health.
An hour after the Queen’s address to the nation, No10 revealed the British Prime Minister, 55, had been sent for tests.
A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “On the advice of his doctor, the Prime Minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests.
“This is a precautionary step, as the Prime Minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus 10 days after testing positive for the virus.
“The Prime Minister thanks NHS staff for all of their incredible hard work and urges the public to continue to follow the Government’s advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”
Mr Johnson went into selfisolation on March 27.
He hoped he would be able to leave after seven days, but he continued to suffer from a fever.
No10 stressed he remains in charge and that he was not a 999 admission.
Earlier, the PM was said to have been “hit like a sledgehammer” by Covid-19.
He has “been coughing and spluttering his way through conference calls”, a source told the Sunday Times.
Mr Johnson had hoped to emerge from his week-long confinement last Friday but was forced to shut away for longer because he still had a fever.
Experts warn a patient suffering a persistent high temperature could be at risk of pneumonia.
Health Secretary Mat Hancock, who was also struck down by Covid-19, earlier insisted the PM was “OK” and “in good spirits”. He told Sky News: “I’ve been talking to him every day, often several times a day, throughout this, throughout the time that both of us were off and so he has very much got his hand on the tiller but he has still got a temperature.
“I was lucky, I had two pretty rough days and then I bounced back and some people do get it pretty mildly, and then for others it’s very, very serious and the Prime Minister is not at that end of the spectrum.”
Mr Johnson continued to post Twitter updates yesterday, urging people to avoid the temptation to go outside in the sunshine.
The PM’S pregnant fiancee Carrie Symonds, 32, has also been laid up with symptoms.
She tweeted: “I’ve spent the past week in bed with the main symptoms of coronavirus.
“I haven’t needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I’m on the mend.
“Being pregnant with Covid-19 is obviously worrying.
“To other pregnant women, please do read and follow the most up to date guidance which I found to be very reassuring.”
