PAUL Mescal warned his relatives to switch off for his steamy scenes but revealed they were still left red-faced.

The 24-year-old, who plays Connell in the TV adaptation of the Sally Rooney novel, told last night’s Graham Norton Show: “My granny warned my great aunt there were a lot of sexy bits and that when she felt those were about to happen she should go off and do something else.

“In episode two when we started kissing she took the dog out but she underestimated the time it would take and as she came back in we were right in the throes of it all.

“I suggested a good long chore or a couple of cups of tea would do the trick next time.”

SALLY Rooney’s Normal People and debut novel Conversations With Friends have generated an estimated €8.37million in sales here and in the UK.

According to figures provided by Nielsen Bookscan, the author from Castlebar, Co Mayo, has taken the No1 spot in the best-sellers list in both countries with Normal People two years

PAUL Mescal’s younger sister admitted she couldn’t face watching his raunchy TV scenes with their parents in the room.

But talking for the first time since the 24-year-old shot to fame in Normal People, proud Nell told how her brother’s success has inspired her to follow her dreams as a singer.

Paul, from Maynooth, Co Kildare, has been the talk of the town since appearing on the hit series – having even caught the attention of the Kardashians last weekend.

And he has since been showcasing his piano and vocal skills online.

Opening up about how life has changed in the Mescal household, Nell revealed musical talent runs in the family.

The 17-year-old student told the Irish Mirror: “I’ve been singing my whole life and Paul kind of came out of the waterworks being able to sing somehow recently.

“My dad is from a very musical family that did loads of drama but I’m more on the musical side so I’ll probably leave the acting to [Paul].

“I’m extremely proud, it’s been crazy. I know the story so well now and I’ve been listening to him talking about it for so long, so it’s weird seeing other people react to it.

“I binged it alone because I could not watch that with my family. But we’ve definitely all been watching and are big fans.

“But even those scenes, they are works of art in their own right and I just think the show is done so beautifully.”

DREAMS

Speaking from their home in Maynooth while Paul is stuck across the water in his new London pad, Nell added: “It’s weird, we all miss him but we are always in contact and enjoying every minute of it. To see him do so well in something he did and loves and was proud of.

“We are very proud of him and the success that comes with it is a massive plus.

“My mum is a frontline worker, she’s a guard, so whenever she is home it is nice to do a lot of Facetime calls. It’s really nice to see all the love the show is getting after all their hard work.”

The singer, who has just released single Deja Vu, said watching Paul take knocks along the way inspired her to pursue her own dreams.

She added: “Nothing ever comes handed on a plate. You have to work for it and his work ethic just shines through.

“He is so determined in everything he does and doesn’t let anything knock him too bad.

“He’s really, really supportive and I play all of my songs to him all of the time.

“Because of how big the show is and the attention on Paul there has been a lot of people coming onto my page which is really nice because I had just released a single.

“It gives me even more drive because I am very confident in the stuff I write and the message and the music, so I don’t feel pressure in that sense. But the more people are watching, I want to do it quicker and faster.”

after it was first published. The 29-year-old is also feted in the US where Sarah Jessica Parker was an early fan of her debut novel, writing on Instagram: “This book. This book. I read it in one day. I hear I’m not alone.”

The Element Pictures team that produced Normal People is already working on bringing Conversations With Friends to the small screen.
